Great newsman Walter Cronkite has passed away from cerebral vascular disease. He was 92.

The former CBS anchor was nothing less than a legend in the news world. He was a permanent fixture on the CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981, and was considered "the most trusted man in America."

From the assassination of John F. Kennedy to Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon, Walter was there every step of the way to guide his viewers through some of the nation's most historic moments.

"He invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down," President Obama said in a statement. "This country has lost an icon and a dear friend, and he will be truly missed."

"It's hard to imagine a man for whom I had more admiration," Mike Wallace of "60 Minutes" said on CNN. "... He was a superb reporter and honorable man."

Walter is survived by his three children, Nancy, Kathy and Walter III, and four grandsons.

The original "anchorman" ended all of his newscasts with, "And THAT's the way it is" -- and that pretty much says it all.
