'Cutting Edge': Is there such a thing as too much?
I've pondered this question deeply this morning upon hearing the news that ABC Family is making yet another sequel — the third now — to the 1992 sleepover favorite starring Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney. And I've decided the answer is: No. There is not such a thing as too much Cutting Edge. The fact is, I would queue up that old VHS tape (yes, it's available on DVD — even in a Gold Medal Edition! — but I like to maintain the authenticity of the experience) right now and enjoy every minute of the he's-a-tough-hockey-player, she's-a-spoiled-figure-skater clashes just as much as the first time I watched it, despite the fact that I've probably seen it at least a dozen times. (To me, that means there's plenty of juice for at least a made-for-TV sequel or three.) Please enjoy this trailer, in case you've forgotten how much fun it is — and reflect fondly on a time when a Pamchenko could solve everyone's problems. (Surely you haven't forgotten what becomes the couple's signature — and totally physically impossible in real-life, as dissected brilliantly by The Onion's A.V. Club — move.)
The follow-up sequels, which have all run on ABC Family, have been, well, less good. They did not have Pamchenkos or anyone repeatedly yelling 'toe pick!' They did not have Kelly and Sweeney. What they did have, however, was that same guilty-pleasure core: hot people at odds with each other (until two hours pass and they can fall in love) and Olympic gold on the line. The latter's so compelling, we watch it even when it doesn't involve an unlikely romance or pushy parents or anyone from the wrong side of the tracks. (It's called 'actually watching the Olympics.') This new one even gives us a girl hockey player (gender reversal, always a good time!), and even better, she's played by Secret Life of the American Teenager's sexpot Francia Raisa, who livens up any scene she's in. Better still, this likely means a day-long marathon of all the Cutting Edges when this thing airs in the spring — and that means seeing 90210's delicious Matt Lanter in No. 3, Chasing the Dream. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday seven months from now.
What about you, PopWatchers? Can you use a little more Cutting Edge in your life? Or should ABC let the original's sterling legacy speak for itself?
