David Letterman admitted on Thursday that he had sexual relations with female members of his staff and was the victim of a $2 million extortion attempt because of it.

Here’s what the 62-year-old star said on Thursday’s Late Show:

On giving a testimony: “This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

On admitting to engaging in sexual relationships with staff members: “My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would.”

On why he testified: “I feel like I need to protect these people – I need to certainly protect my family.”

With the help of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Special Prosecution Bureau, Letterman participated in a sting operation that included David handing a counterfeit $2 million check to the extortionist, who was arrested on Thursday.

Letterman married longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March (they’ve been dating since 1986). They have a son, Harry, who turns 6 next month.

UPDATE: Robert Halderman, a producer for CBS, has been arrested for extorting Letterman. Radar reports he lived with the woman who Letterman was involved with. The affair happened before his son was born but Letterman was living with his wife-to-be at the time.

This makes me mad...it's so gross and typical. I don't know much about his personal life but I know he's been with his now wife for a long time, whether they had breaks or broken up at some point I don't know. How embarrassing for her.

It is so sad for his family that he couldn't keep his weenie in his pants.

That being said, good for him for going to the authorities and not just paying off the blackmailer, as I am sure so many people in his situation have.

I do give him credit for having the balls to say it and get it out there, but why do it in the first place ya know?

I watched it last night too...it was like he was doing his usual schtick and people were laughing. It should've been serious. I think I'll be watching Conan or nothing at all during that time from now on.

bah. Who cares? Most of these guys cheat.
Do you not watch a Brad Pitt movie because he cheated? Never going to watch a Mel Gibson movie again because he cheated? Hugh Grant? Eddie Murphy? blah, blah, blah....

I dont excuse their infidelities but we arent in their positions to know all the facts about their marriages and relationships.

(Ew I could name at least a dozen reasons why I would not watch a Mel Gibson movie.)

Anywho, I'd totally bang Letterman if it meant I got a raise, a promotion, a diamond bracelet, or the ability to brag about it to my nanna.

So do you think other late night hosts are going to use Letterman fodder in their beginning stand ups?

I dunno, I am the sort of person that doesn't support gross celebrities. Or gross businesses. It's the only power I have.

That must greatly limit the things you watch both on TV and in the theater

Not really, I don't let everything bug me. But yea, if someone beats up their girlfriend I don't buy their music, or rapes a child I'm not going to watch their movies. I also don't shop at Walmart, or shop at places with bad costumer service because it's what I can do to not support them.

Megan - yep, Jimmy Fallon made a joke at Letterman's expense.

Sex with the intern, but they were in 'love'...supposedly.

He has a romp room above the set, spicy.
