Now that was an enjoyable episode of Lost.'
It didn't move the ball forward in a whole lot of different areas -
they're clearly saving up a lot of big reveals for the final three
hours of the season (which air on May 15 and May 29), but I enjoyed the
heck out of various elements of "Cabin Fever."
I get absurdly excited every time Richard Alpert (the wonderfully
spooky Nestor Carbonell) arrives on the scene. I just know he's going
to bust out some major-league Dharma Initiative goodness one of these
days, and his mere presence boosted my enjoyment level of an already
good episode.
[OK, I'm going to talk a lot about last night's episode below, so exit here if you haven't seen it.]I'm sure everyone else noticed this already, but his name, Richard Alpert, was the previous, square' name of a famous '60s and '70s figure and writer, Ram Dass. So, Richard Alpert, whose name has associations with the Eastern-influenced author and teacher Ram Dass, gave a very young Locke a test that recalls the customs of certain Tibetan Buddhist sects. In some Buddhist lineages, monks go out searching for the next incarnation of a tulku, or enlightened spiritual teacher and guide, who has died. If they find a child who appears to be the tulku's next bodily incarnation, a number of objects such as rosaries, ritualistic implements, books, tea-cups, etc., are placed together, and the child must pick out those which belonged to the late tulku, thus showing that he recognizes the things which were his in his previous life,' according to the book Magic and Mystery in Tibet.' (Thank you, Wikipedia. I was familiar with this practice but the Wikipedia site supplied a helpful summary of it.) I really enjoy all these interesting spiritual influences and trippy '70...
