"Friday Night Lights" leading lady Connie Britton booted home an astute extra point about her show ' that its greatness can be traced to what's not in the script. "There's a certain quiet to our show, that I think maybe... the audience really invests in," Britton said late last night, while hyping "FNL" on PBS's "Tavis Smiley." We know exactly what she's talking about.
While most hackneyed Hollywood writers hammer home scenes with explosions or some other cliched action, "FNL" sneaks understated nuance to score powerful dramatic points. For example, remember when QB-1 Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) went on a bender after his gal pal took off and coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) tossed him into the shower? Saracen shot back with an emotional explanation of how girlfriends and his father always leave him. Coach Taylor barely uttered a word back, because his silence spoke volumes. He got it. Touchdown. Then there was the time when assistant coach Mac (Edward "Blue" Deckert) was at odds with black players for his perceived slight against Smash (Gaius Charles) for playing him at running back instead of quarterback. By the end of the episode when Mac skillfully shooed away redneck cops from picking up Smash on trumped up charges, again, little was said. But viewers could feel how players knew Mac had their collective back. "These are people like you and me," said the gorgeous Britton. "It allows the audience a chance to watch the action... and create whatever your experience is with that." Britton admitted the element of "FNL" she struggles most to personally identify with is the rampant sex involving our mythical Dillon HS Panthers.
