I'm going out of town for a long weekend, and posting might be spotty next week as well (a situation that will be more than remedied after the July 4 holiday, when I'll be heading westward to report from the Television Critics Association summer press tour and from San Diego Comic-Con as well). Before I head out, I thought I'd leave you with something a little different, a change of pace from my usual focus on all TV, all the time. Here, for your pleasure, is a list of some of my favorite recent songs, some of which are drawn from shows such as Gossip Girl,' Grey's Anatomy,' House' and so forth. Many other selections come from a great satellite radio station that plays Canadian artists. O Canada, how do you come up with so many stellar bands? To the list of terrific Canadian bands such as Arcade Fire and Tegan and Sara, I'd like to add the Weakerthans and Dearly Beloved, just a few of the cool bands I became aware of thanks to satellite radio emanating from the north of the border. In any case, have a great weekend and if you like the looks of this list, you can get it as an iMix on iTunes (look for Mo's Summer Party Plan). Weakerthans, Sun in an Empty Room': Sweetly melodic and utterly addictive pop-rock from Canada. After hearing this song a couple of times, I challenge you to remove it from your brain. You can't. You can spend days listening to it -- I have.
MGMT, Time to Pretend': This dreamy, sleazy disco track should be the summer's biggest single, if pure awesomeness has anything to do with it. The Teenagers, Feeling Better': I'm a sucker for any song featuring slightly Germanic, atonal, spoken-sung lyrics (Falco, anyone?). This reminds me of the great, ironical and self-aware Art Brut single Formed a Band,' but Feeling Better' is even hookier. Bryn Christopher, The Quest': A Brit featured on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy,' he's being billed as the male Amy Winehouse ...
