Kudos to Bryan Cranston for breaking into the list of semifinalists for the Best Actor in a Drama Emmy, for his role as the cancer-stricken chemistry teacher turned meth-lab maestro on AMC's "Breaking Bad." Congratulations to AMC, not previously known as a hotbed of original programming, for having two actors on the list, Cranston and the shoo-in Jon Hamm of "Mad Men." And high fives to the L.A. Times's Gold Derby blog for getting all the Emmy semis leaked, even though the TV Academy is trying to keep them secret. Nominations come out July 17.
Here are the semi-finalists for Best Actor in a Drama, according to Gold Derby. Boldface indicates who I think will get nominations - everyone on this list is deserving - and the notes in italics are mine:
Gabriel Byrne, "In Treatment" - Absolutely deserving, and people like slumming movie stars.
Kyle Chandler, "Friday Night Lights" - Wow this is a tough category! He'll get a nod before Leary.
Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad" - Every one of these guys was awesome!
Patrick Dempsey, "Grey's Anatomy" - Well, he was only pretty good.
