Cable programs have been dominating critics' Top 10 lists for years, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences took up cable's cause on Thursday.
The academy, which announced its Emmy nominations Thursday morning, handed out its first-ever best drama nods to basic-cable programs. FX's Damages' and AMC's Mad Men,' both of which received multiple nominations, were the history-making nominees.
"30 Rock," from Second City veteran Tina Fey, also made history with its 17 nods -- the largest Emmy-nomination tally ever for a comedy series.
HBO, on the other hand, was shut out of both the best-drama and best-comedy categories, which is even more shocking than the fact that, for the first time, non-HBO programs made it into the best-drama category.
In the drama category, Dexter,' from pay-cable channel Showtime, also got a nod, along with critically favored broadcast-network hits House' and Lost.' Rounding out the category is perennial (and inexplicable) Emmy favorite Boston Legal.' Aside from the basic-cable best-drama nominations, the big story is Mad Men's' impressive Emmy showing. The freshman drama collected an impressive 16 nods in various technical categories and for cast members Jon Hamm, John Slattery and Robert Morse. Creator Matthew Weiner, who previously worked on The Sopranos,' received two writing nominations. Other drama and comedy series receiving multiple nominations include Tina Fey's 30 Rock,' which got 17 nominations, Pushing Daisies, which got 12 nominations, and The Office,' which got eight nominations. Shut out of the biggest Emmy categories were Battlestar Galactica' (which got one writing nod and four technical nominations), Flight of the Conchords' (which got a total of four writing, directing and music nods) and Friday Night Lights' (which got two technical nominations). It had been thought that HBO's The Wire,' which is widely regarded by critics as ...
