Today I'm posting some (belated) impressions from Thursday's ABC panels (sorry they're late, the Emmys sucked up a lot of my time on Thursday). Anyway, yesterday the network presented panels on returning shows Private Practice,' Dirty Sexy Money,' Desperate Housewives.' (Here's a question - why no panel for returning show Pushing Daisies?' Hmmm.) Here's my "Dirty Sexy Money" post, here's "Desperate Housewives," here's "Private Practice."
The most interesting panel by far was one featuring six executive producers from the network's biggest shows. The so-called Showrunners Panel with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse from Lost,' Shonda Rhimes from Grey's Anatomy' and Private Practice,' Silvio Horta from Ugly Betty,' Greg Berlanti (Dirty Sexy Money,' Brothers and Sisters,' Eli Stone'), and Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives'). Over the past few years, ABC has had a difficult time launching comedies that are actually, you know, funny. But ABC had no trouble getting laughs on Wednesday. Despite the occasional drama or nugget of news, it was an entertaining 45 minutes. Cherry and Cuse had a running gag about how Cherry had to translate every sports metaphor that came up into show-tune terminology. Cherry explained that he and Cuse were both negotiators during the writers strike, and that, then and now, Cherry got tired of the constant sports metaphors he heard, and often tried to substitute musical-theater ones.
