Shocked!

I can't believe that I'm the first one to post about this. I had to watch ANTM on it's Friday airing, as my DVR was working overtime on Wednesday and let me tell you I was DISGUSTED by the theme of the photoshoots this week. I understand putting the girls in costumes to have them represent different nationalities, but to have the Asian girl in glorified blackface was over the top for me. In fact, if I was her, I think I would have pulled Jay or Tyra to the side and told them that I was uncomfortable with that. I KNOW that they weren't intentionally being racist, but in this day and age we need to think before we just "do". I was very, very, very surprised that Tyra, with the huge following that she has, didn't think that what she was doing could be misconstrued. -

God I hate people that think that really anything to do with pointing out race is "racist" or demeaning. Grow up and try being "disgusted" by stuff that is actually disgusting. -

Really? In my world "blackface" isn't considered cool by any standards. I don't think it's cool at Halloween, and I don't think it's cool any other day of the week. Are we seriously so desensitized that in this day and age we can think that it is okay? I know quite a few people that were offended by it in my personal group of IRL friends and wanted to see it for myself before I made a judgment call. I can absolutely 100% see where that could bother someone. -

Cinema, just curious, how old are you? I think this might be a generational thing.... -

I see why you would say that, but it's supposed to be art, even if it is just ANTM. It wasn't meant to be anything other than that. Plus they already did this way back in season 4 -

I haven't watched every season of ANTM, so I didn't realize this before. I kept seeing this brought up in the news blogs when they were mentioning the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader that dressed up as Lil Wayne. You are right that there is a very broad definition of what is considered "art", though. -
I think perfectjohn hit the nail on the head--it's definitely a controversial idea, but I don't think they meant any offense by it. Actually to be honest, what I thought was pretty offensive were the ridiculous stereotypes that they used to portray an entire ethnicity. I'm not Native American, but from what I understand the whole "feathered headdress" thing is the equivalent of blackface--a cartoonish, thoughtless depiction of people who actually have a hugely diverse heritage.
I did wonder why they changed everyone's skin tone except Sundai's. Were they afraid of the criticism that might draw?
Anyway I'm glad you brought that up OhNo, I wondered what other people thought about all that. -

Heyjoie - I agree with you 100%. I just thought the whole thing was in poor taste. I'm glad you brought up Sundai's lack of makeup. I feel like it put Jennifer (who had to wear the darkest makeup) in more of an uncomforable position than Sundai, who got to be comfortable in her own skin. The Native American/East Indian outfit was so outlandish - everything about that entire photoshoot just screamed 'controversy' or lack of judgment. And throwing this out there - why, God, why did Tyra have to find a way to tie this god awful idea to our President. SMH. -
Chill out. It was a beautiful photo shoot.

The only one that I thought looked good was Nicole. Her pose, the way they did her hair, etc. just went together perfectly. I thought the other girls looked positively horrid. -
I thought the photo shoot was pointing out the beauty of those races mixed together, and I thought it was in good taste. Biracial beauty deserves to have it's time to shine. I am biracial and I wasn't offended at all, and I'm 30 so it's not a generation thing. Some people just want any reason to whine and cry!
-
I agree with OhNo.Tyra should have known better.
-
It didn't bother me either because it was done seasons ago on here.I don't consider it"blackface"as that term normally is used to demean and this wasn't meant to demean anyone.At"Answers.com"it defines it as"makeup for a conventionalized comic travesty of black people, especially in a minstrel show".And i'm over 30 so it's not a generation thing. Now if we were talking about the guy who played Kramer on the show Seinfeld that is a whole different story cause he did Blackface as a racial thing.Since my great grandmother was born on an indian reservation the whole indian head dress thing was way off cause how often do you see that? Was i offended no,just amused.Get a thicker skin and move on.

1) I do not feel the models were put in "blackface" at all. I thought the makeup was pretty accurate given the racial mix the model was supposed to represent. Remember she used Obama to explain what "hapa" is...hapa doesn't mean BLACK, therefore representing a hapa doesn't equal blackface IMO
2) I'm SHOCKED this crap is still on the air. The older I get, the less and less I can relate to little high schoolers. I appreciate Nicole's maturity at least -

I know what the hell Hapa means! Did you see how they dressed the Asian chick? She looked worse than the Dallas Cowboy cheerleader that dressed up like Lil Wayne for Halloween. I saw this listed on racialicious.com THEN I saw the episode, so maybe seeing what they wrote fired me up. I still think it's in poor taste all ways around. The makeup, the stereotypical clothing, etc. Booooo, Tyra. Try again. -

LMAO it totally did. But after we hung up I kept dozing in and out only to wake up to a bunch of cat puke on my duvet cover. Did I mention this happened RIGHT next to the towel my cat was laying on top of? Fucking hairballs
I just have really bad insommnia and often drag myself to bed around 4...thus sleeping my 8 hours and waking up around noonish. MrToni woke me up before you did and then my mother called after that. as much as mrotni drives me fucking nuts, I have a hard time falling to sleep without his funky ass snoring next to me -

Toni, I understand your insomnia. I am the same way wth my DH...I cant sleep when he is gone...and I can hardly sleep when he is snoring next to me. -
